Importance of Independent Music Venues by Kyle Muehlhauser

Rams Head On Stage recently celebrated its 27th anniversary, and I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts about this business and the importance of independent music venues within communities across the country.

At Rams Head On Stage, we’re all about creating memorable experiences through the power of live music. Our intimate setting allows for a direct and personal connection between artists and our cherished audience. This unique setup, combined with an impressive event calendar, led us to be recognized as the Top Club Under 500 Seats by Pollstar Magazine. We are grateful to have received this recognition, only made possible by our many fans.

The Rams Head commitment goes beyond hosting renowned artists; we're dedicated to being a launchpad for local talent. Rams Head On Stage is a nurturing ground for emerging artists, offering them a stage to showcase their unique talents and connect with a diverse audience. Most of the openers for our national touring artists are local community members. There is so much amazing talent right here in our state’s capital.

Recently, I was asked what I enjoy about running a business in Annapolis and what I love about living in this area. The answer was easy – I enjoy running a business that showcases the charm of this historic waterfront town. It’s exciting to host more than 300 live shows annually and be part of a diverse community that supports live music – it makes Annapolis the music capital of Maryland!  Simply put, Annapolis is a great place to live, work, and raise a family!

In 2023, we welcomed concertgoers from all 50 states and Canada and hosted over 300 shows including one of my personal favorites, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, and the iconic 60’s rock band Three Dog Night. Studies show that restaurant and hotel owners, local attractions, retail establishments, and employees see the benefits of the traveling music fan. We are proud to be a catalyst and economic driver for our local community enhanced not just by drawing concertgoers to our area, but the hiring of local residents to be part of our team. The importance of independently owned music venues and the effect on their communities are far-reaching. According to the National Independent Venue Association’s music venue economic impact calculator, a venue the size of Rams Head On Stage can have a regional economic impact exceeding $2.3 million. We are part of the social fabric of the greater community.

This year, I encourage you to attend a concert, whether Rams Head On Stage or another independently-owned music venue, and experience the magic that can be made by supporting a small business in your community.

Enjoy the show!
