Rams Head attended Preakness this year for both business and pleasure. Our street team and interns were out in full force attending Black Eyed Susan Day (a full day of racing and celebrations the day before Preakness) and Preakness informing fans of our upcoming shows and even giving away some free tickets. Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis has an ongoing “All Ages Matinee” series of concerts that take place several times a month on the weekends. It’s a great way to introduce and expose the under-21 crowd to live music and the performing arts, while enjoying some lunch from our On Stage Menu while you watch the show.

On Saturday May 18^th at 1 p.m., we have an up-and-coming group called Kopecky Family Band, presented by WRNR.

And on Sunday May 19^th at 1:30 p.m. we are hosting upcoming Country-Star, Ashley Forrest’s CD Release party.

With her 2013 debut album, Crofton native Ashley Forrest is set to make a strong impression on Country music fans everywhere.

Earlier this year, the 24-year-old singer finished recording her first full-length album in Nashville, an experience that paired Forrest with Grammy-nominated Country music producer Mark Moffatt. Under Moffatt’s expert direction, and armed with a collection of songs from some of Music City’s finest songwriters, the resulting album turned out much like Ashley herself: polished, poised, and with just the right amount of attitude and mischief for good measure! Crofton native Ashley Forrest has traveled every bit of the distance that her debut album is named for.

“Seven Hundred Miles” represents a lifetime to Forrest. The 2006 Arundel High School graduate named her CD after the exact distance between her home and the Nashville recording studio where she and Grammy-nominated producer Mark Moffatt created a set of 10 songs that range from pop-country to country-pop to pure country.

Forrest and her band will have their coming-out party Sunday at Rams Head On Stage. The 1:30 p.m. all-ages performance will feature opener Meredith Holliday, who is also a member of Forrest’s back-up band, Detour. Tickets are $15 and available here.

At 24 years old, Forrest has visions of the CMAs dancing in her head and maybe even a career similar to that of country pop divas Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and Faith Hill. The Country Music Association named Forrest to its annual “Artists to Watch in 2013” list.

She has already played many private and corporate events, as well as well-received performances at the Anne Arundel County Fair, the Naptown barBAYq festival and Dover International Speedway – “The Monster Mile” – where she sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Forrest has also been a featured artist on local country music radio stations WMZQ (98.7-FM) and WPOC (93.1-FM).

Among the songs featured on “Seven Hundred Miles” are four written by Forrest and six written by major Nashville songwriters. If Forrest dipped her big toe in the water with her first regional single “Eyes Wide Open,” which was released as a pre-album teaser, she dove in the deep end with the release of her first worldwide single, “Pourin’ Over Me,” which beat out several established country artists on the Music Row Breakout Chart.

Jonathan Edwards is best remembered for his crossover hit “Sunshine,” country and folk singer/songwriter Jonathan Edwards is a vital and relevant artist in today’s folk and Americana scenes.

Pronounced, keen-wah, and commonly mistaken for a grain, is actually a seed (weird, we know) that tastes and has the same texture of brown rice and oatmeal. It’s crunchy, fluffy, and somewhat nutty all in one. It can replace rice, potatoes, or even pasta. I’ve even used it as a pizza crust.  It’s mistaken for a gain because of the way it is used and prepared however, it differs greatly in nutritional value.

Qunioa is also great for cardiovascular heath because it is high in magnesium, which helps to relax the blood vessels reducing the rates of hypertension and heart disease. It provides antioxidant support being high in both manganese and copper, which help to promote a healthy immune system, and ensure that red blood cells remain in top condition. Since quinoa is high in fiber, it helps keep the digestive system running smoothly, and can also help reduce your chance of getting gallstones.

This photo of Robert Johnson is one of my favorites and truly captures the spirit of the early, “Deep South” Blues, and is probably one of the most recognized images representing this era.

Robert Johnson’s guitar, songwriting and vocal skills have gone down in history as a major influence of many musicians throughout the years, including Muddy Waters, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, and many more.

Our country has such a rich heritage immersed in the Blues genre, and there are many forms and styles – too many to detail in this short (ish) blog post.  I wanted to touch on a few of these styles by showcasing some of our upcoming Blues acts playing at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis and at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore over the next several months. We hope you’ll share in our enthusiasm!

Hard-rocking blues-soaked guitarist/vocalist/song-writer Tinsley Ellis sings and plays with the energy and soul of all of the great Southern musicians who have come before him. Ellis attacks his music with rock power and blues feeling, following in the tradition of Deep South musical heroes B.B. King, Freddie King, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. Atlanta Magazine declared Ellis “the most significant blues artist to emerge from Atlanta since Blind Willie McTell.”

Arum Rae’s rock and blues influenced melodies lure the audience into a trance. As she plays, the room falls silent except for her sultry voice and electric guitar. Musically infused by Patsy Cline and Leonard Cohen, as much as by Bach and Hank Williams, she’s able to concoct a soul & dance revival, which delicately plays all over the full sonic spectrum.

While not specifically falling into the category of “Blues”, if you have a listen, you’ll most definitely hear the Blues influence. SCOTS’ music is a quintessentially Southern-fried amalgam of rockabilly, boogie, country, blues, swamp pop, and chitlin circuit R&B, plus a liberal dose of California surf guitar and a hint of punk attitude.

If you come to this show (as you should), be prepared to be in the presence of fried chicken:

It has become became a crucial part of their live performances, whether it’s used in eating contests or tossed into the audience – if this has peaked your curiosity, then you must come see them.

And opening up for SCOTS is Little Toby Walker, of whom Bob Margolin, Guitarist for the last Muddy Waters has this to say:

Sonny Landreth’s 11th album, bearing the fittingly evocative title Elemental Journey, is something very different from the Louisiana slide wizard. Released on his own Landfall the album is Landreth’s first all-instrumental effort and his most adventurous work to date.

George Thorogood:

According to Stephen Thomas Erlewine’s write up on All Music Guide, George Thorogood is “a blues-rock guitarist who draws his inspiration from Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor, and Chuck Berry, George Thorogood never earned much respect from blues purists, but he became a popular favorite in the early ’80s through repeated exposure on FM radio and the arena rock circuit.

Thorogood’s music was always loud, simple, and direct — his riffs and licks were taken straight out of ’50s Chicago blues and rock & roll — but his formulaic approach helped him gain a rather large audience in the ’80s, when his albums regularly went gold.”

Buddy Guy:

Buddy Guy is the Shakespeare of blues guitar, channeling its basic elements into a unique language with universal appeal. He’s the Houdini of blues guitar, doing things that ought to be impossible and making them look easy. He put Chicago blues on the map, and then proceeded to conquer the rest of the world.

How can you argue with that?
