What’s Your Favorite Irish Song?

I have a question for you: what is the first thing you think about when you see that March 17th is approaching? Is it beer? Green beer? Guinness? What do I have in my closet that’s green? Getting pinched? Slapping the person that pinched me, and then calling the cops? The cops coming and tasering the “Pincher”? Okay, I will stop. The first thing I really think of is all of the wonderful, cheerful, upbeat Irish music out there; some great newer artists, yes, and some classic, traditional Irish songs that will never die. Here are a few of my faves:

This one will always get our blood pumpin’! And Shane McGowan is STILL out there doing his thing, unbelievably!:

“If I Should Fall from Grace with God” performed by The Pogues

A moving performance by Liam Clancy singing “The Broad Majestic Shannon”

And who better to get us up and moving than The Minions performing “Another Irish Drinking Song”?

This is a very uncreative video, however this one always plays in my mind around St. Patty’s Day. I don’t even remember where I learned it.. was it Girl Scouts? I have no idea. According to Songfacts, this song was written by Irishman Shaun Glenville and Welshman Fred Godfrey, probably in the early 1900s.

“If You’re Irish, Come Into The Parlour”

Here’s a favorite of mine from the 90s. I wonder if we can get them to play here..?
“Linger” by Irish rock band, The Cranberries

Slowing it down a little with a beautiful, old classic, “Danny Boy”, butchered performed by The Muppets:

And who could forget U2, probably one of, if the THE most well known Irish rock band of our generation. (Note, 2U will be playing at Rams Head On Stage in July, if you want the next best thing)
“Sunday Bloody Sunday”

And we’ve had many Irish/Celtic bands over the years, Dublin 5, O’Malley’s March, Scythian, Seamus Kennedy, Gaelic Storm, Fighting Jamesons, Young Dubliners to name a few.

So now are you all ramped up!? Don’t forget that Rams Head Tavern always has one of the best St. Patrick’s Day Parties in town, staying true to the holiday and beginning at 1pm on Monday, MARCH 17th! Come join us in our big, giant tent and hear some great music with Bumpin’ Uglies, Higher Hands and DJ Littlerock. And who can beat $.50 Guinness drafts??

As I am finishing this blog post and removing my ear buds, I recognize that I have been periodically bursting into song, and I’m hoping that’s it hasn’t negatively affected my co-workers’ St. Patty’s Day spirit. Sorry guys.
