Did you know that Rams Head recycles their oyster shells in Annapolis? Yep, each week the kind folks at Oyster Recovery Partnership come and pick up our shells to make us a Shell Recycling Alliance Member.

In total, the Rams Head Tavern Annapolis location donated 32.6 bushels of oyster shells in 2013. This donation, in turn, will plant 162,810 oysters into the Chesapeake Bay.   Rams Head has been participating in this partnership since 2010, so if you’re doing the math that’s nearly 500,000 oysters that you’ve helped to plant into the Chesapeake Bay.  Thanks for eating all those oysters, yum!

What is the Oyster Recovery Partnership?
The Oyster Recovery Partnership or “ORP” is Maryland’s leading 501(c)(3) non-profit that actively promotes, supports and restores oysters in the Chesapeake Bay for both ecologic and economic purposes. Based in Annapolis, MD, ORP engages in numerous Bay-related projects by conducting science-based “in-the-water” and “on-the-land” recovery efforts, while conducting public outreach and education in our quest to protect our environment, preserve our heritage and

share our knowledge of the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to its large-scale oyster restoration activities, ORP operates the widely-popular Shell Recycling Alliance, supports the Marylanders Grow Oysters program and provides aquaculture and wild fishery support services.  Futhermore, ORP believes that engaging citizens to learn about, and aid in, oyster restoration efforts is imperative for successfully restoring the oyster population in our Bay.

Oyster reefs are one of the most endangered habitats on the planet, yet are critical to the Chesapeake Bay’s long-term recovery. A healthy oyster reef not only filters the Bay’s waters, but also provides habitat for other important marine life such as blue crabs and striped bass. Over the past decade, the Partnership has planted more than 4 BILLION oysters back into the Bay on more than 1,500 acres of oyster reefs and recycled an estimated 1,200 tons of shell.

So, how can you help with this wonderful initiative?

  • Dine at the restaurants that participate in this program
  • Recycle your own oyster shells from home
  • You can volunteer at various events around town
  • Or donate

Follow the Oyster Recovery Partnership on Facebook & Twitter for more updates.  And in the meantime, Give ‘Em SHELL.
