K’s Choice – “Not An Addict”

Breathe it in and breathe it out. That’s the essence of Belgian band K’s Choice.

It has been 17 years since the brother-and-sister-fronted band released its second album “Paradise in Me,” which featured the universal hit song “Not an Addict.”

K’s Choice will make its Rams Head On Stage debut April 24 in support of “Echo Mountain,” the band’s fifth studio album and first in a decade.

Though the band never really gained commercial success in the U.S. — there were appearances at the Lilith Fair, Lollapalooza and the wildly popular former HFStivals — K’s Choice has been a huge hit throughout Europe for nearly two decades.

Let me say right now that I am a K’s Choice apologist. The lack of commercial success for the band astounds me. If there is one term to best describe their style, it would be “different.”

Sarah and Gert Bettens blend harmonies and complement each other’s talents so effortlessly, one might think they began collaborating in the womb.

During the 1990s, a musical period when grunge and Death Row Records pulled a 1-8-7 on any sound that was neither Seattle- or Compton-based, K’s Choice, like Annapolis’ own Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, was its own sound.

Yes, it would be blasphemous to mention the band as equals alongside 90s legends Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. However, it would be an even worse mistake to discount K’s Choice because of their lack of U.S. notoriety.

Sarah and Gert never had the sibling rivalry (nor did they have the same level of worldwide success) that Oasis’ Liam and Noel Gallagher famously endured until the latter group’s breakup in 2009. K’s Choice has taken short hiatuses over the years while Sarah and Gert pursued solo endeavors, but never because of infighting or inflated egos. Any fame the Bettens siblings garnered over the last 20 years was earned because of their compositions, voices and ability to find the right musical accompanists.

Sarah, who supported her second solo album “Never Say Goodbye” with a show at Rams Head Onstage in October 2009, will be making her second trip to Annapolis next week. Naptown, in my opinion, is the best natural and homegrown music city in the world. Come check out a band whose sound has endured nearly two decades.
