Rams Head Tavern Savage Mill Names Michael Urquhart Head Chef

After recently spending time at Rams Head Tavern Annapolis, Mikey is back in Savage!

Michael Urquhart was born and raised in Dundee Scotland and apprenticed at The Old Course Hotel in St. Andrews, a five star hotel located on the Old Course Golf Course, the oldest and first golf course in the world. In his time there, he rose to the rank of Demi Chef.

Uquhart moved to America in 1997 and his first job in the U.S. was at Rams Head in Annapolis. After spending two years there he became Sous Chef at Rams Head Tavern Savage Mill and eventually became the Executive Chef where he remained for nine years.  Urquhart left Rams Head for a short time and entered the corporate world. Bringing newly acquired skills with him, Urquhart returned to Rams Head.

Urquhart was raised primarily by his grandmother and aunt, which is where his love of cooking began. “Some of my best memories are of bugging granny to show me how to make cakes and soups when I was at her house”, said Urquhart. It wasn’t until the shop where he was an apprentice blacksmith closed that he attended college and found out that cooking was what he was really good at.

When asked what he likes cooking most Urquhart answered, “anything, but I have a flair for anything Latin”. Urquhart hopes to “take Rams Head Savage to the next level and really turn it into a destination restaurant with outstanding dishes”.

As Executive Chef, Urquhart oversees all the culinary decisions at Rams Head Tavern Savage Mill, including daily specials, new menu items, special events and the entire culinary team. Most recently, he is now creating food pairings specially for Rams Head beer releases which occur monthly.

Join Rams Head Tavern Savage Mill at their next beer release on March 7th to try Mikey’s Cherry Blossom Lager food pairing: Pulled pork sliders with a cherry barbeque sauce.
